The various sciences: botany, biology, astronomy, mathematics etc. started out as little puddles of light in an ocean of ignorance. Individuals working in the various sciences were highly specialized in their individual disciplines, and regarded the other disciplines with disinterest or distrust. For centuries scientific research was aimed more at resolving more detail in those puddles of knowledge rather than making them bigger.
In the mid-20th Century things started to change, and now that change is in full-swing. The explosion in science and technology has expanded those puddles until they are touching and overlapping. Astronomy now involves geology, chemistry and other sciences, and physics is getting into everything.
